Unlock Ancient Wisdom
Many things can keep us awake at night. Physical pain, medical conditions, jet lag, and work schedules can disrupt our sleep. Hormonal changes and some medications can also be culprits. However, the number one reason people cite for sleeplessness is stress and anxiety.
Worries about work, finances, family issues, or a general sense of unease about the future can all contribute to restless nights. In these times, we can find wisdom and comfort in an ancient source—the Bible.
This collection of sacred wisdom, used for spiritual purposes throughout history, offers a powerful way to address the turmoil that keeps us from rest. At Psalm 4, David made two requests of God. First, to hear his prayer and to show him mercy. In our own times of uncertainty, it's easy to feel like God is distant or indifferent. But David’s example reminds us that we can trust God hears us, even if the answer isn't what we expect. Second, he asked God to "expand the boundaries that encompass me," or to provide a barrier between him and his troubles. This is a powerful reminder that God can and will protect us.
David called God "the God of my righteousness," which means he trusted that God would always do what is right, even if it’s not what we would choose. This faith allows us to surrender our agenda and trust that God knows the right path, even if that path leads through difficult times.
As James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” It is through trials that we gain strength and character.
David ended his psalm by declaring that because he has placed his hope and trust in God, he can "lie down in peace and sleep." He wasn’t relying on his own power or circumstances to bring him security. He found peace in knowing that God was in control, working through the storm.
Just like David, we can find true peace not by avoiding our troubles, but by trusting in God's presence within them and walking the ancient paths of ancient wisdom that allows us to rest, knowing that God is with us and will make all things right.
